Swansea Council has approved its own plan to convert part of an existing park and ride car park near the city’s docks into a motorhome overnight parking area capable of holding up to 10 vehicles.
The motorhomes staying at the site off Fabian Way would be able to stay for an unusually long time for an aire – a maximum of 96 hours.
The plan includes provision for waste water disposal, but no electric hook-up.
The site is already close to a bus station where there are toilets.
In its application, the council concedes that the existing Swansea Marina Touring Park already provides a dedicated short-stay motorhome facility in the city centre.
But it adds that there there is an identified need for additional managed motorhome provision at appropriate locations in a city that currently welcomes 4.62 million visitors a year, including 1.6 million staying visitors.
It says including an aire service system on the site will also make it a convenient place for other motorhome users entering and leaving Swansea to stop and use such facilities before continuing their onward journey. This, it says, should reduce “pressure” on “informal” locations that may have been used for such purposes in the past, and “support responsible visitor behaviour”.
In other recent news, Bailey has launched its new Ford Transit-based Ascent range, with ‘vans set to be on display at this week’s NEC Show. The range is made up of five models and includes a ‘van which has electrically operated drop-down single beds.
