A Scottish council has approved a scheme to provide overnight motorhome parking on one of its most popular seafronts.
On Tuesday, North Ayrshire Council’s cabinet approved a plan to turn the existing council-owned Bowencraig East Car Park on the seafront at Largs into a designated motorhome parking area as part of a pilot project.
Under the plan, there would be parking for up to 20 campervans or motorhomes, with water and electricity connections and sewage disposal all provided for a charge that is yet to be decided.
Councillor Tom Marshall, chair of the council’s Tourism Forum, said, “We agreed that it was time we had a dedicated site for motorhomes and decided to fund the provision of services at the council’s car park close to the marina, where on a busy weekend there can be up to 20 campervans. This is an attractive site close to the seafront and the marina services.”
Some £100,000 towards the scheme is coming from over £300,000 the council is getting in the 2026/7 financial year from the Crown Estate.
It is one of 19 authorities in the country to receive a payment from the net revenue generated by the Crown Estate’s assets within its waters.
The allocation has to be used to deliver coastal community benefits and offer a high level of flexibility. The motorhome parking scheme is one of three projects that the council believes meet the criteria for funding.

The introduction of parking in Largs follows Forestry England’s decision to permit overnight parking at seven of its car parks this summer. The scheme, which will run from 16th July to 14th September, will allow stays of up to two nights to be permitted at each car park.
